Every year I make resolutions for the new year. Some I keep, most I don’t.

Take last year — I was going to finish drafting my new book (we’ll call it Urban Fantasy Opus … UFO for short) and have it sold by February. Ha! After many revisions, I am making the final revisions next week (or so I plan while others who shall not be named snicker). The problem was another of my last year’s resolutions: to take my writing to a new level. Turns out that interferes with the old writing process. Duh. Think of it this way — if you exercise for three decades by running on a neatly groomed and level running path, when you switch to running through barely visible tracks in the wood…you’re going to get lost. A lot.

This year, my only resolutions concerning UFO is that I don’t let it out of my hands until it is the best it can be. Maybe that will be next week. Maybe it will be next year. We’ll see.

But, actually, I can’t call it a resolution. Because I’m not doing resolutions this year. My mad year of learning to create differently has taught me I need to approach the new year that way, too. Resolutions are soooo last millennium.

2010 is the year for solutions. Forget the re. I’m going to keep working on UFO until I love every paragraph. I’m going to keep trying exercises until I don’t have to think twice about whether I’ve moved from my chair all day — I will have. However long it takes. Whatever jagged, cliff ridden path that leads me there.

Solutions.
